the joke is that she is in semi-real seinen world, but looks like shoujo manga character- weirdly deformed, huge eyes, weird thin neck etc.

That's how i remember it as well. The whole anime adaptation that's actually fully new material approach was weird, and I don't think it worked out for them, as there were no copycats.
