"In her 40s" could mean she's 43-ish, which would mean Riku was born when she was (more reasonably) 16-18. Either way, the implication is that Riku came about in rather difficult circumstances, although clearly they circled back around to it later for Umi.
As long as people keep reading Shōsetsuka-slop and buying the LN adaptations, they'll keep making manga adaptations.
Bonus points to this one for naming the veterinarian "Zeke Veterinari". Almost as good as that one where the main character is named Breed because he raises dragons or something.
In a genre rife with "my sister/cousin/whatever stole my fiancee and caused my downfall", it's nice to see some honest to god supportive sibling relationships. They're not all-loving cinnamon buns of people, and in a more cynical setting both Philia and Mia could easily be turned against each...
It does feel weirdly like a throuple. Like they'd be having a romantic moment and the cat's just... there? It's one thing when you know it's just a cat, but we've established that's not the case!
No offense to the previous scanlators, but its nice to have a release that doesn't seem to think that quality is directly proportional to the number of fonts one can pack into a single speech bubble.
It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take itself so goddamn seriously. Kanan-sama is in the same boat at the moment, but at least its keeping things moving and mostly focusing on the core cast('s T&A). This is bogged down with literal whos and fake drama.
