I re-read the thing and I think he's convinced she's annoyed at him, she's been pretty cold to him in general after chapter 14 and he might think that she disliked it or noticed he had feelings for her and decided to put distance between them.

Wasn't it compared to Taiki's and even her own determination to win? sure she lost but Taiki also lost many times, if that didn't stop him I don't see how loosing would imply Hina would've learned to stop.
