While I won't say it can't happen, this doesn't really feel like the kind of work to kill off any major characters. The tone of this series is very light-hearted with the occasional tension but you can't have major consequences like that without drastically changing the core appeal of it.

The entire point of the story is that these two stopped communicating properly and their relationship spiraled downward because of it. She never properly responded to his advances and so he felt like she didn't want him anymore and in turn he stopped asking.

Trying to apply human rates of growth and age to non-humans doesn't really work. If someone is physically and mentally an adult for their species it doesn't matter how many human years old they are.
