No reason a spinoff has to have characters that aren't true to the main series. No reason a spinoff can't feel like just an extension of the main series. It CAN be helped.
Spinoff doesn't explicitly mean bad.
First they try to break their promise with him despite him already paying off some of the debts, then they expect him to risk his life to protect the kingdom against a massively dangerous threat.
