I agree, I love the stories the author tell in Children of the Whales so I decided to pick up this manga. It's certainly rough in many areas especially the fight scenes since it's her second work and her first manga was about volleyball but the stories told here are exactly what I was looking...

Now that I think back on it, it's highly likely Yuu's father is the one responsible for taking his mother's left eye 4 years ago.

To be fair, this is the first monster that came after her eye since the first day of school. Asahi's been at Kamio for at least 4-5 months by estimation using the previous mention of rainy season. That and the majority of monsters she has encountered weren't even targeting her eye.

I'm not really sure about the brother thing with the current context, the term used was aniki so it's either elder brother or referring to a superior. I'm guessing we'll learn about the mother's left eye soon though.

I suppose this chapter confirmed Haruto used to be a girl, I couldn't tell prior to this because they always addressed Haruto neutrally.

This manga is actually surprisingly tame and children friendly after the first chapter.
