The kanji for his title is Junsa bucho which is Sergeant. Bucho is sometimes translated chief so I could see how the translation would look that way. It's not the same word as a military sergeant like in English.

I like the emotional aspect of sports manga but in relation to the competition and players themselves. So Goro's relation with Gibson Sr. and Jr. for example is very interesting to me but things like Toshi and his sister isn't. A lot of it feels very soap opera-ish and overtly dramatic to me...
