I went into the story expecting a braindead kink manga for fun. But on top of the kink, there was also some extremely solid character development and surprisingly mature, responsible writing, and it was one of the stories I most looked forward to reading when posted. Thank you for the translation!

I'd guess it's a defense mechanism for trust issues. It's harder to be manipulated if you're faced with constant reminders that you actually have no idea what anyone else is really thinking or feeling. Especially if their faces are replaced by ominous shadowy masses.
