How do they verify claims of past life knowledge? Hopefully they explain the next chapter. Otherwise it seems like basically everyone who knows that's a thing would just say that so they could move up in status.
@Tempkschris He wouldn't be physically capable of it. Decapitation is actually pretty difficult. Even a strong man with an axe would often have to take more than one swing to finish the job.
Minor point, but I was kind of annoyed that they used filler text from A Midsummer Night's Dream in the background of a page explaining a quote from the Bible. Japanese won't know the difference for the most part, but it's just lazy.
