Yes, I agree. At least up until now it's written as if she didn't even bother to keep in touch for 17 years until she actually needed something from him. It makes her look really bad, and the author is going to have to make some pretty good arguments to change the reader's mind about her.

It doesn't say who she marries. I think the author makes a lot of omissions in order to focus on the message he is trying to convey. Personally, I don't like it at all. By "attendance", they mean being there when the baby is born.

Really an unnecessary "twist" in my opinion. Not that I didn't expect it, but it's like trying to give a depressing "that's life" message every 2 or 3 chapters. Really disappointing.
