    Isekai Shikkaku - Vol. 8 Ch. 46

    Oof. Reset arc. I'm out.

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? - Ch. 68.2

Yeah, I'm taking a break from this one at this point. Yet another isekai that meandered off into mid-ness. As usual, reset arcs are just bad storytelling and it doesn't seem it will recover. All the tempo and cohesion there was is gone.... I had high hopes for this one, having stayed so pure to...

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? - Ch. 68.1

Agreed. Like so many isekai's it seems to be petering out before any conclusion. In my experience it's rather rare for fantasy in general to recover from these reset arcs, but I'm hoping I'm wrong with this one. The manga has been one of my favourite isekais up till now.

What's the most disastrous sequel to an anime you have ever seen?

GiTS: Innocence deserves a mention in my book. Even Studio Ghibli couldn't save that terrible script. GiTS without Motoko is just pointless. She is absolutely the centerpiece of all GiTS stories, how she clings on to humanity through feminine displays and imagined mortality despite being a...

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? - Ch. 67.1

Oof, this Chapter was rough. I really was holding out hope for an isekai that stays pure, but a Level Reset? That's a very bad sign in my book, like the creators painted themselves into a corner and don't know where to go from there. From here on out, I get the feeling things will get random...

Tropes you can’t stand in certain genres

Harem/Reverse Harem, all genres. Such a narcissistic and/or puerile trope that I just can't. Hard pass for me.

Historical question: earliest (non-villainess) exiled/banished manga?

Akira Kurosawa's use of ronin in this role was directly influenced by 19th-early-20th c. adventure novels (Kurosawa specifially mentioned Dashiell Hammett in interviews) so considering his influence on anything visual, it's almost certainly direct. Yoyimbo is a pretty obvious connection in my...

Historical question: earliest (non-villainess) exiled/banished manga?

I would say the Ramayana is probably one of the earliest examples. Rama is exiled for fourteen years after a plot by envious rivals. Rama is a prince and the pictorial renditions of the banishment scene almost has an engagement-annulment vibe. And yeah, Rama turns out 100% to be one of those...

The Saga of Tanya the Evil - Vol. 19 Ch. 54 - The Intervention Which Was Too Late V

    Yikes, Shutterstock images in a manga? That's a new low. (p. 20)

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? - Ch. 66.2

The plot is very different from the LN and Anime. Not really any direct correspondence; indeed those versions spoil major reveals in the manga from the first pages and episodes. I consider the manga the purest dungeon-levelling-isekai ever made and love it to bits for it. The other versions are...

Trying to find an isekai about math

"Suuji de Sukuu! Jyakushou Kokka" It's not strictly a flashback with the boob-graph, it's the opening panels. Naoki is trying to find a way to make math more popular :sneaky:

    Suterare Seijo no Isekai Gohantabi

@Mondhexe Yes, a bunch really. Most "slow-life" isekai start out in the same vein. Cooking specifically is one of the larger sub-sub-genres of the slow-life isekai. Brewing, pastries, tea, health/super-food and of course Japanese food-- there's one or several for each. There's also pretty much...

Lady Rose wa Heimin ni Naritai

Rather forced plot contrivances in this one and I'm not quite ready to buy the "it's supposed to be like that 'cuz it's an otome isekai". Feels rather like a mystery plot, which doesn't really suit the setting in my opinion. I kind of regret reading it before it's complete, it's one of those I...

I, a Commoner, Was Actually Reincarnated

@Dommelien Maybe that's the case, I honestly don't know enough about gender roles in Japan to be able to tell. As an exercise I've been trying to think of counter-examples in the genre (that are Japanese), ie "go-off-on-her-own isekai". After only being able to think of two off the bat...

I, a Commoner, Was Actually Reincarnated

As a middle-aged white dude I'm pretty tired of these stories where the MC decides to go off on her own but only manages that for a few pages and then becomes dependent on some romance target ikemen. Some real relationships with proper setups and payoffs would be really nice for a change, rather...

How to Grill Our Love - Vol. 2 Ch. 8 - Light Gyoza for a Cold Shoulder

@saitoh514 Lake Hamana is connected to the ocean after a massive earthquake in 1498 and has both cephalopods, sea bass and oysters. It's technically a lagoon.
