I'm actually sad they changed the flow of the kidnapping incident. I guess they simplified this plot point for the sake of the poor artists.

So the author is actually exhibiting a good amount of mind control. Also, the main characters are heavily influenced by the mechanics of the original storyline, so they have no choice but to fit in their prewritten character profiles.

Winter was testing her during the cult island arc and she didn't appreciate that. Winter didn't mean for the kids to get kidnapped and everything to get as far as it did, but he did facilitate the situation.
