I feel like he was half-baked. His shaken belief in the cause he stood for could have been developed into a source of strength.

It is hard to root for this MC.
But instead of being a generic altruistic guy, he's looking out for number 1. Something no sane person should take for granted in an unknown world in an unknown culture.
In a trope scenario, he would've squared off against some unpopular brute that's begrudingly...
This is a breath of fresh air.
An MC that casually disrespects the goddess that brings them over to the world, gets thrown out with nothing, goes insane, and attacks the first humans he sees in a mixture of despair, anxiety, insanity and tiredness.
