Remember how the 1st Squadron entered the hole in chapter 15? I feel like that was a plot point. Best case scenario, they turn up at the last minute and save everyone. Worst case scenario, right before super-mode Jin kills the tentacle, it reveals that it's holding the 1st Squadron hostage.

As Harley Quinn once said, "We're bad guys, it's what we do." That aside, maybe this guy needs to be able to watch his "puppets" in order to control them.
