The entity featured in this story taking the form of the collected resentment of a jilted lover could be based on a real Japanese folklore called the Ikiryo or "Living Ghost", said to be either the whole or part of someone's spirit that leaves their body and may go and haunt or curse the source of their anguish usually without the individual's waking knowledge.

My thought had always been some kind of camcorder, but it's also something he desperately wants to keep hidden given how he stood in front of it when the girl came in without warning, and now he was glad his mom didn't find it. I remember an earlier chapter had a comment that suggested a severed head, but that's incredibly conspicuous and also pretty easy to smell out.
Maybe “we” are something connected to the girl? Something innocuous but stolen from her, possibly - that would explain why it needs be hidden from her but the mom wouldn’t think it was weird.
