Well, short haired girl (I can't remember her name and can't be arsed to go look it up) is definitely playing a game and/or trying to drive a permanent wedge between the two. The problem was he never intended to use that book on her. He was just reading the lines in the toilet when she happened to pass by. Not to mention, she was mocking him right before. She hurt him first. It wasn't just conscience.
