The main heroine seems really awkward... Why does she have to even pretend she doesn't recognize the protagonist? At the very least, I'd expect her to recognize him but be curt and make it clear she has low expectations of him or that he's disappointed her.

Well, maybe she just has a really cool demeanor toward everyone. She was kind of like that in the flashback too.

okay so I think it's similar to parasyte in how the kaiju transformation work. The bug kaiju went inside the mc's mouth expecting to take over his body but instead, he was given full control of the kaiju. While infiltration kaiju probably succeeded and fully possessed the human.
