I'm going to guess this is an efficiency thing. He can probably recharge his mana supply faster than other people, because most nobles rely upon their naturally large mana reserves, where he has needed to refill his to do any sort of spell.

I think he made high pressure plasma (think solar fusion) by reflecting and compressing the trapped between the two circles. If you want to up it a notch, you could include reflecting the light, but that would require the spell sphere to get darker when he is compressing it (since the light would be reflected back to the center and therefore be dimmer to the observer).
