kinda late to say this but the last 25 or so chapters being a few practice matches (literally not even an important tournament or anything, just friendlies) with all this emotional whatever is insane. maybe this is normal for sports manga or something, but this just feels weird lmao. save the "player who quit comes back at a vital moment & subs in for someone injured" moment for like, championships, not a practice match

That would only work if it was a good fencer. Judging by his backstory, he isn't an expert. A win can be justified here as people aren't en garde during practice matches, rather than a high-stakes situation. If it were somebody like the captain, then that would make sense. The 2nd year has narrative weight, but that's it. You need to be more than just important to the narrative to suddenly save a championship, or even a tournament match.
I honestly don't think that they are going to win even with this. Score a few hits and boost the 2nd year's confidence perhaps, but not win. It just wouldn't make sense unless I'm significantly underestimating his skills.

I would guess that sports manga thrive off rivalry, as there isn't much a writer can do to raise the stakes short of prize money for a sick parent. As that would shift the tone a bit too much for this, I would guess that it will focus a lot more on the relationships between rivals to raise the stakes. The only other sports manga I've read was Koroko no Basket, and it did the same.
