I'm not religious and used to really demonize it due to being brought up in a very religious area, but as i got older i got to realize that religion itself isn't really bad, what nitani said about how the pope believes in god, while he believes in the pope, and how it doesn't really matter is perfect, the specifics or the system doesn't really matter, but the teachings does, as thats where the value really comes from, there's a real danger in compartmentalizing people based on their views that the general public seems very comfortable with doing, taking the worst actions of a group and then labelling the whole, rather than judging individual action.
