No, fuck this ending.
Reiichi never got his comeuppance for sending Nico to her death. I don't care if he's been living with the guilt. He never told anyone who mattered about what he did. Bansai would be well within his rights to beat that little piece of shit to death for what he did.
Also: Who the fuck just runs away from a house fire instead of waiting for the fire department? They could have found Nico and at least been with her before she died; instead of leaving her to die alone in the forest. I mean, if she was able to see them leaving from a window, she could have broken the window and screamed to get their attention. Yes, I know that would invalidate her whole reason for becoming a ghost, but come the fuck on, dude.
And since we're asking these questions: Why did only Nico become a ghost and the parents didn't?
I generally like this author's storytelling, but their endings are always contrived bullshit.

I guess there are worse endings, but this seriously leaves a LOT to be desired. I would have liked a longer story that focused on him moving past Nico and no longer needing her (like to the female love interest who popped in the middle the story, blatantly told the audience she liked the MC, and... that’s it. Nothing really happened or developed there other than some BS “I shouldn’t tell him even when the opportunity is perfect and he should probably get interested in anyone other than a ghost”). Instead the ending just sorta felt like “well, Nico’s disappearing, guess I better throw everything on the table, instantly get the courage, instantly remember our promise, have a flashback to explain our promise to the audience, and then have an obligatory Xyrs later that does absolutely NOTHING to provide closure (and instead does just the opposite by suggesting Nico is maybe partly still there, but not actually, but who knows)”.
I’m just gonna go ahead and assume this was axed for my sanity. It’s disappointing, I was liking the story, but was actually thinking there wasn’t enough development between Nico’s and the Mc’s relationship (or at all) overtime, and then it’s just shoved in my face all at once.

This doesn't seem like it was axed, this definitely felt like an ending that came about organically, but it's still really lackluster. Kinda sad because this series had a lot of moments which felt like they were leading to something more, but every time the potential fizzled out. Forgettable ending as the cherry on top of a mostly forgettable story. Bummer.

Endings are hard; sad but true. Often times, when we like an ending, it's because the author decides to just add something readers would like (marriage scenes and family life and etc.) and less about how well it was written.
But for this series, it wouldn't work since the only real romance development was with a ghost that moved on. So he just has to write something good.
This feels like it's where the author wanted to end things, but it also feels like there just wasn't enough.
Sure, a little girl had a one sided crush on him, but that held little weight in the series.
And I'm sure there was a limit to how many pages he had (cause remember, they need to publish it in a book).
His story got published and is turned into a show, and he still has a close relationship with all of his friends and he still remembers his old home and is no longer haunted by the past.
Technically, an ending that answers everything. Just a bit lack luster.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the story is about getting over things and moving forward. It's not about (successful) romance, revenge or comeuppance.
Yoake had to get over his unrequited love.
Reiichi had to get over the fact that there will always be someone better than you at whatever you do (for saying something he shouldn't while in a state of panic over his house burning down and accidentally causing someone to die, eternal guilt and a burnt hand is good enough punishment). He did immediately regret it, and even confessed it on chapters 15-16.
Hiyoko had to get over the fact that Tsugumi didn't see her as a woman (though this might change in the future).
Nico had to get over the fact that she can't stay with Tsugumi.
And Tsugumi had to get over the fact that Nico is gone.
You could reason that Tsugumi's parents didn't become ghosts because they died without regret, certain that everyone else had made it out alive.

Its not bad, is a bit predictible, but still good. Also i think the author should show Nico return to make it better

So Nico will come back to fulfill every regrets (or promises, to look it in a more positive light) they made, eh?
Maybe this manga doesn't have that "kick" to it, but still has a melancholic vibe that I can enjoy to.
