It's actually respectable how well the author can keep the character personalities consistent. Hajime is a former street urchin of rough circumstances, and then a regular solo adventurer in a remote village. Consequently he's not too bright, certainly not educated, and his psychology skills are mere basic street smarts. He's never going to show any particular insight and won't be in a habit of suspecting someone's advice just for the sake of a second opinion, if he has no special reason to. Veronica isn't much smarter.
