I am feeling like the MC is stupid.
He was living a living in a terribly boring life. He was chosen to be a hero. Marel choose him and did the unspeakable to him. The trolls were an unexpected variable (he should blame the guild for not knowing the danger). If he hadn't killed the trolls? He and Marel would have been killed unless those knights pulled some OP skill. The only thing that he should regrett is having gone to those knights when they summed him. He should have pretended he was away on a mission or something...

No, the matter for subjugation quest is unrelated, you were warned by her not to get associated with the knights too much and yet you got carried away when they called you a Hero. you can refuse and they can’t do shit about it but yeah.. this is just plain stupid, “I want to live freely in this world” but playing with government.

No, sir; you did not do anything wrong.

I've been in some bad situations, before; it’s almost never immediately clear or obvious that things are as bad as they are in situations like this, and I'm pretty impressed at the realism of the story.

I would have a LOT of trouble not setting the "knights" on fire, and I would never, EVER, trust any representative of that government again.

It would be hard not to try and hunt down the fuckers responsible and at least burn their mansions down; maybe cast the weakest possible healing spell on them, so they stay burned, wishing they could die, but unable to do so.

Yanno, like a subtle reminder.

Why didn't that ring protect it's rightful owner from committing unalive?

Do you want a new demon king? Because this is how you get a new demon king. Their history even has this exact scenario playing out previously, and these idiots in Calendil just doubled-down.
Why are they trusting the knights? Wasn't he given that tracking knife by the Noble they work for? Honestly I'd put the majority of the blame on said Noble.
He gave the assassin-knight to the same group of knights, knowing full well that she's a part of their group.
