Urasawa writes some depressing stuff, but it never ends on a depressing note. His stories are full of optimism. That doesn't mean that everything will be perfect at the end of a series, but the characters will have learned something, and be in a better place as people. That's why I love his work so much. Optimism.

You should also read 20th Century Boys and Monster by the same mangaka, they are very good, and it will give you a good idea of what to expect from him.

@AStrangerIsHere Thanks for the suggestions, I’ve heard good things about both of those before. This is my first work by the mangaka and I really like it so far. I’ll definitely check the other two out.

Monster is amazing, but I just read Pluto and it doesn't live up to it's early chapters. I recommend reading the other two major works of the author first
