Yeah, the fact that a room full of top researchers and engineers don't know how far Mars is or how fast radio waves travel is laughable.
Granted most sci-fi manga have a rudimentary understanding of science.
Like confusing evolution for adaption, strange time-travel mechanics and paradoxes, and size restrictions of living organisms.
(I particularly like that last one, shrinking and enlarging of creatures is quite impossible because of a simple and elegant mathematical law called the square-cube law. You can't have an ant the size of a human that is able to lift 5000x it's own weight, nor would scaled-up giant hornets be able to fly because of the same principle.
