Watch out Igarashi! There's a slippery slope ahead! Oops! Too late...
It looks like deceit is contagious, and that once stalwart pillar of honesty and integrity, Igarashi, has been hanging around with Chiyo so long that he's now become infected by her. I can't say that I'm happy about this development. Keeping secrets and hiding the truth from your significant other is not a good idea, as I have been harping on about Chiyo and the secret she shares with Ookuma. No doubt this will eventually come back to bite him in the ass, and probably a lot sooner than Chiyo hiding the truth about Ookuma from her boyfriend.

@FredFriendly I think it's all fine, if she does that he can do it as well, problem is that it's possibly will go down as Igarashi takes the brunt of everything, while Chiyo will get away with the whole Ookuma shit.

Idk why you guys think the Ookuma thing is a big deal. That all in happened in the past and has no bearing on their current relationship. What Igarishi is doing is way worse. He's currently in a relationship and being a complete dunce about it.

I agree with @Tora
The Ookuma thing was never really relevant and it's just in the past, unless something changes and she has to be clear about that.

@Istvan90623 Unfortunately, Igarashi has a propensity to apologize and accept responsibility even if he's not the one to cause turmoil.

@Tora @Xylo To put it simply...

if Chiyo and Ookuma were in such an intimate relationship in Middle School to the extent that they would probably have become boyfriend and girlfriend had not Ookuma become a complete dick after hearing rumors about Chiyo and then never spoken to her again, why include him as an active participant in the story to begin with?

Fine, Chiyo suffered "love trauma" because of the way Ookuma treated her. That was all explained in chapter 14. Okay, now we know why she had a hard time dealing with Igarashi when they got reunited. Is there a reason to further include Ookuma as an active participant in the story? Nope.

Unless, of course, your long-term plan is to make Ookuma an actual love rival to Igarashi. So, you make Ookuma Igarashi's senpai at work (oh, what a coincidence). You have Ookuma and Chiyo cross paths a couple of times, and then when they are "introduced" by Igarashi, they both deceive him into believing that they had never met each other before. Chiyo has a brief (and I do mean brief) hint of conciousness that she ought to come clean and tell her boyfriend "that stuff about Ookuma" being the one who caused her "love trauma," but that all lasted just 2 (count them, 2) panels and it hasn't crossed her mind since chapter 55.

Ookuma clearly still has a thing for Chiyo, as demonstrated multiple times, and she has never forgotten him, either. We will never know if Ookuma was just going to apologize to Chiyo at the festival, or if he was, as Igarashi thought, actually going to confess to her. Chiyo has even used her memory of time spent with Ookuma to try to make Igarashi jealous (chapter 122).

We are constantly being reminded of Chiyo and Ookuma's past by his continued active presence in the story.

So, why is it a big deal that Chiyo is still keeping a secret with Ookuma instead of being open and honest with her boyfriend about it? For the same and primary reason that Igarashi not telling Chiyo the whole truth about Subaru is wrong: you should not lie to or keep secrets from your significant other if you want your relationship to last for a long time.

How does that past "relationship" have a bearing on Chiyo and Igarashi's current relationship? In more ways than one. As a result of having suffered that "love trauma," Chiyo has become a top-level tsundere at whose irrational outburst Igarashi suffers. It is also the reason why she does not trust Igarashi to be alone with other women (though it's fine for her to be alone with other men). And it is also likely a contributing factor to Chiyo's readiness to be deceitful.

I have long thought that, if Chiyo were to actually apologise to Igarashi about decieving him, confess that she and Ookuma had really known each other in Middle School, and that she had had a crush on him, she could become a much better person by lifting the burden of her past off her shoulders. Unfortunately, after more than a hundred chapters, it's doubtful that will ever happen.

I had to unblock you to see what your response was @FredFriendly and once again I'm not surprised by your convoluted way of thinking. You're over complicating the situation for no reason. She's not going over to Ookuma's house, having a drink and lying about it. They don't even hang out in secret at all. Their past relationship doesn't matter. Not everyone likes to make a big deal about past relationships especially if they've been severely hurt by them. They want to forget about it and move on. She even supported her friend going out with Ookuma. I really don't see what your issue with her is. Igarashi is bigger dunce than she is at this point.

P.S. Don't bother responding to me because I'm blocking you again. Really can't stand your negative views on every manga I see you comment on.

@FredFriendly - So basically because she was hurt and her being a woman, she gets a pass (not to you but to the people defending her actions and the author) but it's not okay for her boyfriend to even remotely, in the same realm, do something like her. Color me surprised. Also, that was not a simple explanation, lol. I always find it funny when people (especially women) try and say the past was irrelevant. When, not surprise, it has a very big relevance on their life. I mean seriously, if Chiyo went to her past "not-relevant" male "friend" wanting him to comfort her if she and Igarashi had a bad fight and one thing led to another, all of a sudden that relationship has "relevance". It's happened for hundreds of year's like that and drama's love to do it as well.

Anyway, this is just all kinds of shitty drama; not sure why it's "award winning" when there are plenty of other stories just like this ( character-wise anyway). But, ya, this is just getting worse and worse and honestly, if Chiyo has a melt-down over this, and not handles it the way it should (it's Chiyo, what am I saying) I'm gonna drop it. Of course, if by the odd miracle Igarashi really does take things too far/cheat, this is all on him.
