As Supercheese mentioned. Everyone knows, that blunt weapons are the way to go against skeletons. His sword mastery, should also work with a mace to a certain degree.

@Onepunchjoey The guy would need to possess quite interesting skills to pull off something like that. If we assume the MC has a soul, it would be some sort of soul search and dream control magics. His sword skills would then surely be only his secondary asset.

Propose: So, the "spy" on the road didn't kill him, he cast a spell on SkeleBro because he wanted to figure out what he is, and is now trying to take over his body/soul(?) because hey, who doesn't want an obedient skeleton minion, and this dream sequence is SkeleBro's chance to subvert the spell.

Or he's dead (again) and this is his last chance to get back to the spawn point, I dunno.
