well, it said they need to breathe that special air so (while it's unclear for now just how bad it is for them to breathe the filtered air) I'm guessing it's the respirator to provide the special air while in the sheltered city and the gas mask (probably reinforced with magitech stuffs or whatever powers they "evolved" into being able to use to somehow serve as armor) as a safety measure on account of the whole fighting for their lives as mercenaries thing, cause sure a respirator is easy enough to use in a peaceful setting, but when bullets knives bombs and god knows what all else from these supposed superpowers are all flying around in a lethal chaotic mess, it's probably nice to have that little bit of extra safety there
