Well, that was out of left field. At least it seemed about as consensual as a master/maid relationship could be, but I'm wondering why the author threw it in. Maybe it'll be important later?

@Shinonico I'm not sure it's wise to take any Jonathan Swift quote out of context at face value, considering that one of his best-known essays (A Modest Proposal) is pure satire that recommends setting up a system where poor Irish sell their children to Englishmen to be eaten as a solution to the bad conditions in English-occupied Ireland, and goes into some detail about the potential methods of cooking and eating children. Of course, the point he's making was that English rule of Ireland was so bad that it would probably be better if the English were literally eating babies, not truly advocating it as a solution.

I think he's probably making a point in a similar style in what you're quoting, about the fact that it's at least partially due to the societal double-standard moralizing and sweeping the topic under the rug that women in those situations weren't able to get the support they needed.

It literally happens a lot. Fucking beta authors write these beta male main characters or extremely stupid detestable ones like the one in here, then they show other characters having sex onscreen or offscreen. Why? These fuckers don't have the excuse that it's not allowed anymore since they fucking did it with other characters. Just to cuck the beta Mc.

I think you are taking the manga comment section a tad bit too seriously if you found my comment worrying. I did notice you agreed with me in your final sentence.

I can't blame you. I had meant to make the first section a quote and for whatever reason, I failed in the formatting. That's my bad.

If you look at the final sentence you can tell I was making a broad statement mostly in regards to fiction from Chinese and Japanese sources, and that the new angle was refreshing to me.

Believe me, I don't take any of this very seriously - look at my avatar. I didn't find the comment worrying, but wanted to point out that Swift had a habit of mocking the social mores of his time and poking grubby fingers at the chinks in the metaphorical glass, rather than being a straight-up authoritative 'this is how it was in olden times' source (particularly when small quotes are taken out of context), which was the impression I got from that comment. Maybe I am a bit too serious (especially when it's about older authors that I respect, and not the webtoon itself), but I'm generally just jabbing around to have fun discussions.

That's entirely fair. Frankly, given the blushes and such, I was anticipating some sort of unrequited secret crush on the part of the maid, along the lines of "they have that sort of relationship - why can't I?" after hearing the... acting our protagonists gave. That's what I've been led to expect from this sort of thing.

Suddenly they're screwing, and it's heavily implied they've been doing this for a while, and it seems like they're both pretty into it and very ok with it. That's quite refreshing, as you said. It's not the ugly bastard (or, god help us, the Fat Faceless Man^TM) noble abusing his power to force himself on someone just to show the readers how evil he is, and it's not the unrequited crush jazz - this seems mutual. Swift's criticism still stands, but this is a very different take than we usually get to see in anything but the Imperial Chinese Concubine Drama genre.

Now, if the guy with the long white hair and the magnum dong doesn't give her "£20 a year for life" (or equivalent) after this, he's definitely a scumbag.
