@Garn Well we actually don't know anything about the MC, so to call him a modern time civilian is a bit of a stretch...

@Shiroi_Kage jus sayin i know that what bandits typically do.
these guys werent established as hardened criminals
the torture was downplayed significantly, i mean even in the interrogation room..
but the brutal part that WAS conveyed was the knights slaughtering said bandits without a second thought
the build up was also weird b/c it looked like blondie was blushing or flustered in a comedic way, once she had heard our MC knew where the bandits were
once again a stark contrast from what she would later go on to do
the bandits seemed the least evil, only left to our assumption that they are bad, b/c they look like bandits are called bandits and therefore do "bandit" things
also they dont have boobs

@MolaCola If these are the same bandits the MC saw when he first came to the world, and we can assume they are because they're in the same area he marked when he left the first time, they were literally holding a mutilated arm, I feel like we can assume they're hardened criminals, infact I can't think of anything that would make you anymore of a hardened criminal than murded. However, I do agree with how quick the female knight's tone shifts tho.

I like the MC a lot, a lot of people seem to not have noticed the darkness in the MC in the first chapter, but I mean when he's introduced to the church gal and she claims to have magic that can sense lies, he comments on how useful that would be back where he's from, which means at the very least, he lives in a untrusting environment, then when he gets taken to the cave and literally watches a troupe of bandits get slaughtered, most would probably be scarred, but instead he was just kinda unfazed, and then the fact that he knows how to persuade people without beating the ever loving shit out of them, probably leads to a situation where he has to hold a silver tongue. So I have 3 guesses as to his circumstances he came from:

Obviously Japan because that's just how these stories go :

1st: He literally just lives in a strict family, like obscenely strict, maybe involved in politics, and a competitive one at that, a good example is the one in Death Mount Death Parade, the perfect family on the outside but everyone is lonely and hates each other on the inside. That would explain the need for lie detection and why he has such a sweet way with words. But that doesnt work out the whole, I'm cool with seeing murder, type deal.

2nd: He lived impoverished, had to make a living conning, and that's where he got his communication skills. The need for a silver tounge with the threat of loan sharks and police, and also finding out if he's set-up or not(which might be how he arrived, he died in a set up and got send to the fantasy world, which is why lie detection would've been useful.) It would make a lot more sense on why he was better suited for murder, because while still uncommon, it would be more common than if he lived a normal life.

3rd: Super genius intellect Otaku NEET who is antisocial and dropped out of school and stayed in his room. He tripped down the stairs when going to get a glass of water and badda boom badda bing here we are.

I would add a 4th. The type that loses their parents in an accident, and other relatives 'take care' of him, usurping the insurance and whatever property they had in their names, and treating him like trash or a servant, while praising their own children to the sky, but outwardly it all seems like one happy family , so nice to take in an orphaned relative.

@Robbini That is the mc background of Death Mage and that novel about a kid that could steal skills of enemies(he was killed for insurance money). The Death Mage is healing while the latter still have issues(he is not phased by his followers torturing his enemies..overlord level torture )

@Wancakes that was mb missed that twice and almost a third time somehow
still, it was a small panel
and was more like an aside, easily overlooked (tone was reflective of that in the interrogation scene, look at the faces of the bandits they're a joke)
whereas the brutality of the knights had what this brief moment lacked in many regards

Yes it's from Death Mage, but there are probably a few others that have somewhat similar backgrounds as well

It might be clearer in Japanese culture why bandits deserve being killed immediately (this is purely a guess, but maybe the abundance of bandits during the era of the shogunate caused it to become ingrained in their culture), which negates the need for establishing anything because bandit=bad. It's kind of like asking National Treasure to build up the importance of the Declaration of Independence before doing anything with it. It's not necessary given the cultural context.

As for the knight, it's a very common trope. The author is trying to establish a gap moe for her, which is unfortunately all too common. That part is just appealing to a specific audience that will end up liking it.
