@MavB_ver I tried both versions to decide which to read, and honestly this one reads more coherently. I don't know about how faithful the TL is, but from what I saw both read almost the same way in terms of meaning, but the other version felt less coherent in terms of expression in English.

That's the work of an editor/proofreader for you. I usually don't care to check it (this chapter include, though the title hit me hard so I looked it up a bit) but there's a lot of divergences between the two translations in every chapters that make you curious which is more accurate. And this version leaves you an impression that the translator is so incompetent that he has to make up for what he doesn't fully understand, which is one of the worst that you can call it a rewritten version rather than translation.

Well, what I wanted to point out from the title's mistranslation is that the translator is either so careless or the knowledge of the languge is so bad that he translated it that way. I really don't want to say that there's a work of MTL here, so let's assume it's one of those two.

@MavB_Ver I don't think there's that much of a difference between "postbattle exchange with slave" and "postmatch slave", I'd rather have the first too since it provides more context. I would be worried only if there was a mistranslation that modifies the meaning of a statement relevant to the plot. TL freedom I do not mind as long as it reads more fluidly and doesn't change the meaning.

Someone called my attention to this, so I'll give some explanation regarding my translation of this chapter's title.

The title, in Japanese, is 交流戦後のスレイブ (kouryuusengo no slave)

交流戦 is usually used to refer to the interleague play in Japan. That's why, in chapter 9, Yuuki thought Kyouka was talking about baseball. I translated it as "exhibition games" back then to keep Yuuki's confusion understandable, but after a while I just translated it as "matches". A literal translation for 交流戦 without baseball and games in the picture would be "exchange battles."

後 means "after". So 交流戦後 is "after the exchange battles."

の ("no") is a multipurpose (but generally possessive) particle. In this case, it's sort of like how "Hangyaku no Ruruushu" is "Lelouch of the Rebellion".

So 交流戦後のスレイブ would be, extremely literally, "The slave of the after the exchange battles." I translated it as "Postmatch slave" because it is short and means the same thing.

So I hope that explains it, @criver @MavB_Ver

i think both translations work, and its up to the reader to decide which one they prefer, literal or a more loose translation. it looks like black cat opted into being less literal in favour of the title reading better in english, and ardesc opted into being more literal, dont think either is a mistranslation. i compared the rest of the chapter as well and it looks like the meaning is generally the same all over

Yeah, it's no relevant to the plot, but there's a big difference between the two, and so it changes the meaning. The subject shifts from slave in the original to exchange in the translation, with slave as the side component that enhances the meaning of exchange. Though Ardesc's may looks crude, it stay true to the meaning.

@FnAScan I'm not that rigid to not acknowledge liberal translations. However, there's a limit to that liberty so it doesn't affect the meaning and the nuance of the sentences, or else it fails as a translation. Don't know about the rest of this chapter as I got struck just by the title alone, but I can point out what the major differences were in previous chapter and how they affected the meaning.

I'm going to read the other one because the pages are bigger. That's pretty much it.
