This is why I'm so invested in this manga, it doesn't just let background characters be background characters. It's not Komi meets a new friend and they never talk again, but here are actual people with actual lives that go on even after Komi becomes friendly towards them. Say what you want about wanting more romance or whatever, but I think this is what communication is about, meeting other people and investing in their lives.

I'd say it's a parody of it, i mean, who names their kid "Childhood Friend"? However, it also subverts it, because he/she so far hasn't got any secret romantic feelings for MC like most childhood friends in manga do. You could say they are staying in their lane whilst helping the main pairing.
