Calling the Chelsea Hotel “upscale” is a stretch. These days it’s a two-star hotel in a good location for touring Manhattan, but in the 1960s it was pretty seedy. If it weren’t for its past famous residents (and deaths), it’s doubtful it would be more notable than any of the other former, since improved, dives in the area.
