i wish that, instead of them having that one bad interaction in 6th grade and ignoring each other until HS, they had many little bad interaction that built up animosity between then. Actually idk why the author didn't do this instead. It'd be far more credible.

newsflash tho, poor people have pride too.

Taking his angle, he never asked for her pity, never wanted it, and in the end got in trouble for it; People kept talking about his situation, and that may have been the last straw. Besides, there is something quite bothersome and superficial about being pitied by some stranger who doesn't truly understand your struggles. In the end everyone involved in that situation smashed whatever pride that 11 y/o had left, while he was probably in the peak of the abuse he was suffering.

He may not be right to resent her, but I, as an once broke-ass child can understand where he's coming from.

@blueoddog Thank you so much for saying that a lot of people are commenting that he's a jerk and ungrateful, yet he never asked for her pity.
