Bear in mind that that is because cheap isekai commonly use game mechanics as it's an easy shorthand for character power development that doesn't require the author to come up with new ways of showing that the mc has become stronger, faster, more skilled, or clever than they where before. Annoying thing is, that's typically NOT what it conveys as stats and level often feel detached from the mc as a character.
You can't really say it's cuz he's meandering aimlessly cuz, unlike most isekai, he has stated goals, not for the overall story but for each arc he'll have something he wants to do like the Loong trail, getting to the bottom of the undead dungeon, getting a fairy, etc. Anyway, it's not that this is like isekai but that isekai have a habit of ripping off gameworld stories.
