Cabel did a lot of nice things for her before the confession. Every time Rene thought he would scold her, he's instead been super gracious. She admitted that she had judged him too harshly. And she had those thoughts about feeling safe when he's around. It really doesn't make sense to me that she's still this afraid. Feels like the author is just using it as a plot device without regard for what Rene herself has already said about her view of Cabel.
