Don't just decide that what you want is what the story should be for everyone else. From literally the very beginning, there was a backstory of why he likes this village specifically, some kind of vaguely forgotten memories and all of that. Then you come in like herp derp, now I suddenly hate it even though it's been hinted at for a while now.

May be a tired old trope. But the presence of the trope alone does not suggest an inherent weakness in the story.
I am neutral about it as a whole myself. But it gives her something of a motivation and indicates a pre existing feeling rather than having to waste time explaining the relationships build up. It can be an easy thing to use if your story is not centered around their relationship but instead it feeds into the story as a whole. Which is generally what they're going for here in the LN.
