The idea is that if you tried to hire him or make him work for you he would just pack up and leave. But if you just make things comfortable and let him do his own thing he will hang around keep working for you. Kind of like a stray cat.
In this case he is a very big stray cat that can kill anything that annoys him, and anything that would 'rock the boat' is considered annoying.
I wonder how many magic books that guy from the White Tower has for Purply... And is the failed knight noble the failed noble that is running the group that the MC is looking to go destroy?
