Because it's 21st century, and people no longer have to be over-the-top manly or over-the-top feminine.
And that is fine.
Oh those macho manly men itt, completely forgot woman wore pants long before pyramids were built... also it was high in style to wear high heels just 18th century by every respected dude... also, also, frills everywhere in 16th to 17th century on guys was op move.

Actually, we should get back to good ol'days, people would go apeshit.

They also seem to forget that drawing in a particular style comes with limitations, and we can't expect an artist to be able to translate every bit of realistic physical nuance in a monotone, stroke-based, highly stylized drawing... That's why in some manga styles, passable cross-dressing is super easy to do, both ways.

Most artists like to work around this limitation by exaggerating women's features, often times to a fault (as they all end up with the same body type and impossible clothes), and way too many readers seem to be very used to it. Therefore, when someone dares to approach it differently, they get very "confused".

Everyday I'm straying away further from straighness
Maybe it's because you never were straight in the first place, and you're only discovering yourself?
Apparently, a lot of people would like to avoid being straight (just think of all the new potential partners! as well as not having to deal with opposite gender!), but they can't actually do it.

Even if I'm not actually straight, I'm in a society where I would be beheaded (metaphorically) if I were to be found out not straight... So yeah, maybe I never discovered myself to begin with... But one way or another I have to run away from my community before even thinking about other things

How do you get metaphorically beheaded?

Like being excommunicated and denied of all access within the community, rendering all activity useless, except leaving the place, which I'm currently trying to
I see no problem with that, if you had misfortune of stepping into shit, you're most likely not supposed to tap dance on it but let it either slowly do the nature her way or be it cleansed by someone who has opportunity to deal with nothing but filth. You have my sincere support in achieving your goal.

Sorry to hear that, man. You're safe here.
