Of course, his
timing relative to the notice of her husband's death is... questionable, although not necessarily unforgivable. And the way he presses his suit so doggedly, justifiably raises concerns, as it should in all cases widowed or no. And, I still have no idea how old he is.
But in
general, the notion that no widow would want to be romanced seems quite contrary to human experience. Are we supposed to abandon widows and widowers to solitude, even if they don't wish it? Just to maintain some romanticized notion of the permanence of marriage? At the very least, someone should certainly be allowed to ask if they're interested.
