It's ironic that, in their pursuit of immortality, many people probably poisoned themselves to death trying to create elixirs out of things like mercury.

Well, the thing is, orpiment/realgar had an embalming effect when consumed over a long period of time, and this would have been very apparent in Chinese culture where a deceased person's body was often kept for up to three years (for mourning) before being properly buried. So it is possible that this whole thing came about from a misunderstanding of, "Hey, that guy who kept eating that stuff didn't rot after he died! Damn, he must've been so close to immortality."

Some thematic irony here for the historyknowers re:eternal life and toppling the empire

Töregene ends up taking over the Mongol Empire after Ogedei dies, and actually plays a big part in the conquest of the Song dynasty and the subjugation of the Seljuk Turks. She basically sets up the groundwork for the Empire's greatest expansion under Tolui and Sorghaghtani's children.

At last Fatima is doing witch stuff! How cunning, specially when she did her homework with some actual specialist before making her move.
