I highly recommendIt must be good if even @gomichandesu is here
That was intentional on her part. She wanted to protect Mako to the very end, including keeping her record clean.Thank you for the translations!
Right up until the end her lawyers were well meaning but totally useless. They not only failed to exonerate her for a murder she didn't commit, they also got her to confess to a killing she wasn't even being tried for (rapist guy).
Exactly what I thought. Poor Mako was exploited all her life, to the point that she saw herself as dirty and unworthy of happiness. All the photo/video evidence of her exploitation horrified her because it further cemented the thought that she wouldn't be able to escape as long as there was existing proof and thus had no future. Being recorded became a trauma point for her and it was the main reason she felt she couldn't continue living, because there was always going be evidence of it. That's why one of the main points regarding Mizuki's revenge was having all the data of Mako's abuse destroyed. You really have to consider societal values when it comes to women in a japan, especially women who have faced sex related crimes. Many would have said she was a slut who deserved her fate for getting involved with shady folks, taking those pictures and engaging in sex, regardless of her circumstances or whether she consented to those pictures being exposed. With Mako now dead and Mizuki being a witness to the pictures/videos ,it made those involved that were in possession of the data want to delete it so they wouldn't be implicated further. It's why she confronted the father regarding the images; as long as evidence was erased, her revenge concerning him was already complete. She didn't have to do anything to ruin his life,he was living a shit life anyways and without income from Mako, his days were numbered. The reason why she particularly targeted Akatsuuki was because he was the one who was going to get off scot-free and live a healthy, successful life even after all the wrong he had done. It didn't matter if she was dragged down into the mud along with him. Mizuki, just like Mako, had already given up on her own happiness and future due to her own familial circumstances. Mako was all she had,the only person in the world who genuinely cared about her, someone who committed murder to protect her. By further involving Akatsuuki and smearing his name, she made him not only delete all the evidence of Mako's sexual abuse, but also ruined his reputation beyond repair. Him going to jail was only half of her plan, the other half was maintaining Mako's image by exposing his true face to the general public. She knew it was going to be difficult to frame him for a murder that never occured, but that wasn't her main goal. Her plan was perfectly orchestrated be sensational and high profile from the start, stirring up as much media attention as possible. It didn't matter if he only got convicted for the drug use + stalking, it didn't matter if he only did a few years in prison and it didn't matter that she was going to be the one going to prison for Mako's murder. By making herself a "victim" of his deceit to the public,he was always going to be seen as criminal and menace who manipulated poor, innocent women like Mizuki and Mako. Ultimately she cleared Mako's image so the world would see Mako the way she saw her; as a young innocent victim who was unfairly taken advantage of,who was nothing but kind and undeserving of death. A lot of people say that her revenge felt kind of empty because she was still convicted of the murder and had to do time, but her plan and the story itself was never fully about revenge. It was about love, about two girls that only had each other and would have done anything to protect each other even if everyone was against them. And so that's what she did,she protected Mako until the very end. That was intentional on her part. She wanted to protect Mako to the very end, including keeping her record clean.
Thanks to the scanlation team for bringing us a beautiful and heartbreaking story, I admit I binged this, foregoing sleep and chores to see it through.
In my headcanon our Mizuki, now in her late twenties becomes an excellent mystery writer in Tokyo
