At this point I think only a sociopath like shimamura can deal with someone so needy like adachi.

Yeah, they are both so insanely toxic in different ways that neither could ever have a relationship with a normal person. Their relationship works because their separate toxicities mesh perfectly. Shimamura needs someone willing to constantly bulldoze through her barrier of apathy, and Adachi needs someone detached enough not to feel absolutely suffocated by how insanely possessive and co-dependent she is.

It's such a fascinating mess to watch in action, lol.
