Am I the only one that finds it strange how people are acting about archers? For sure in some cultures, they were not heavily focused on but they were an important thing for every country to have at least some range. Just find it strange...

I think the idea is that you only need a lot of archers if your building an army, and you only need an army if your thinking about rebelling against the king.

Which is interesting, as England actually had a law everyone HAD to be a trained archer so they could be drafted into the army.

Main character is running this on game after reading gamefaqs...

Yeah, I agree. Unless in this world you have a really good protection against arrows, it is indeed baffling how they react to it, specially when Ellen said "Swords are more used in battle than bows". If anything, swords are much more useless in the front than bows lol. It's still a great read though, thanks a lot for the translation btw, scanlators.

Maybe melee weapons are easier to imbue one's magic into than projectiles in this world? They did mention something about a weapon being able to withstand the duke's power.

I remember reading in some other unrelated series where magic users have difficulties maintaining power on projectiles like arrows and throwing daggers once it's launched and they can't directly touch it any longer; perhaps this world have the same issue.

Not really tbh. Like most in medieval history, an army was needed because paying a standing army is costly. Like the vassals needed to have their own troops and in need, they would give part of the troops to the king to support in wars. This is because of how payment worked. Like the duke pays the king but keeps most of the wealth from the land with him. It was not really that you needed to have an army to fight the king but you needed an army to fight other vassals if needed and expand your realm if you have hostile neighbors.

Yeah, it is still fun to read for sure! Tbh, thing this is just a thing people think is normal in history but swords were used a lot but not if we compare it to spears and shields and bows. Just find it funny how everyone is being so strange about bows. Like even for monster fighting some bows would be great to have distance or lure them in a trap.

Maybe? But is it needed? Like we don't really know how common magic is in this world. If everyone can put magic on their sword and can't with arrows then I see why. As bit so long there is no mana upkeep but if not then arrows would shred most things. Like we have tanks in this world and that does not mean we stop using normal rifles.

I just think even in a world with magic it would have it place for example if the magic can be put on armor then maybe they can't use magic on their sword so good if you are defending. If they are using magic on their sword then they can be shot. If they can do both without losing mana then yeah can see a point if every soldier can have it but if only the duke can have it or other high ranking people only then use bows to shoot the rest.

It is a bit like plate armor and steel swords and all that knight used in our world. Yeah, devastating but they get tired faster and can be surrounded and killed/captured without the right support.

For sure thinking too much about it but still find it funny the shock they have about using it for arrows. Like it was not stated why the material is better but if it is sharper then it can push trough armor better then most.

Spears were used more than swords, anyway, by infantry. A spear is much easier to use effectively, it has more range, plus it requires less training to reach a useful level to be use for armies. A spear also uses less metal than a sword, which was a huge deal before industrialisation. Swords are just much more romanticised, especially now later when such weapons are not used for actual fighting. Even back when guns replaced older weapons, swords still lingered especially for duels. Not that it would surprise me massively if random manga, manhwa, or manhua artists don't really know much about it all and fall for the "swords are the best and most important" hype.
