Well, they do say that the only certainties in life are death and taxes

Even gods can't beat lawyers when they play by human rules

I didn't pretty sure with sadai argument about marriage law, when the marriage held long before modern Japan law.
But I agree with Sadai when He said "In your life until now
have you ever lived with Aeka-san, or even supported her?"
Yep. In the story Aeka never meet her husband until recently that He possessed sadai body. More than hundred years she life alone.

Hmm, sound argument regarding the marriage laws, but do those laws even exist 800 years ago?
Perhaps not in that exact wording, but I'm pretty sure laws about what constitutes a proper marriage has been a round for at least a couple milennia. It has implications for inheritance of real estate for example, and that's really important for everything from growing the crops for your daily bread (or rice in this case) to, yes, taxation.

Lawyering, as in "knowing the laws", has been around since society was invented.

Common law marriage was the norm in Japan before the Reconstruction period (after WW2) and its conditions are exactly like Sadai expounded. The current system in Japan is marriage by civil registry, and while the general concept was introduced in the Meiji Reformation, the model used now is based on the American model. Come to think of it, the god loses either way because he also obviously can't register his marriage under the present system without a family registry.

For some reason this reminded me of the post-bossfight scene in A hat in Time. Yknow, with The Snatcher.
"You... Understand that's not how contracts work, right?"
"..."
"You're quite the character, arent you. And a tough negotiator.
Fine! I'll sweeten the deal for you."
