@Cheesewizard the author is Chinese and Lilith games(the studio that made AFK arena) is also a Chinese company. As long as the author gained their permission, or was asked and is sponsoring them, plagiarism is strict and illegal in China. So there's a low chance of "ripping off characters" without permission.

@thisworldofmine1 "plagiarism is strict and illegal in China" lmao okay, every has to say that but enforcing is a different thing. I've talked to a Lilith employee and they didn't know about it, but they did say what the author was doing was 'totally fine' for now. There's only a possibility of legal issues if the author gets published without the property being licensed by Lilith.

@ShionSinX: On everyone else's copyrights, certainly, at least historically. I believe the implication was that it could be more of an issue because the copyright holder was also Chinese.

Of course it's basically irrelevant because even in western countries usually only the most anal-retentive of legal departments (like maybe Disney?) would come seriously after not-for-profit or small-time fan stuff, except for maybe the occasional dumb claim.
