Also, I haven't seen anything that really hooks me and we're seven chapters in already. We've gotten a few tantalizing things here and there - like who is this mystery woman that taught him magic, who and where is this childhood friend of his named Hiro and where, and is Skrell gonna quit messing around now that Eldrid is in the picture? But it's still not quite enough. I need a solid A-Plot to keep me interested.

This is a world with magically enforced slavery. And ruthless people. With such a low ranking, it's surprising more people haven't been listening to the conversations in the past about potion making. And then deciding to slap a slave collar around on someone with crafting skills but supposedly not enough fighting ability to defend himself against experienced and greedy people armed with something to debuff or put to sleep their target long enough to slap a slave collar on them.
