I know it trope in this type of story to fight it out, surprise the opponents & profit, but how did they go from "oh no we so weak, it the big bad evil sect that kill them " to offering to duel ? Should it not be the other side forcing the duel on some random "can't back away" reason?

It's common for the perceived weak side to offer to duel so that the strong side cannot pull off any surprise attacks or unopposable slaughtering. The strong side typically is willing to give the weak side this chance of a fair fight in order to win convincingly and prevent further troubles afterwards. The strong side often has no reason to force a duel since if they want to fight they will just start with beating you up with that strength difference.
