Iirc military enrollment is mandatory in Korea so they had to address it one way or another

a big part is probably that it's mandatory to enlist.
But also having served in the military also makes you look dependable and stuff. ( even if honestly has little to do with it )
So if it comes down to word against word people are going to be more willing to believe a veteran or a high ranking officer.
So it's not completely useless for him if he attempts to get into a higher rank while doing his mandatory enlistment.
Not to mention the connections he could make in there could help him out later...

It's known that all able-bodied Korean men must enlist and serve in the military for a couple of years after becoming of age by their laws standards. Other countries do this as well.
