Looking back on t his series, Oh! Great committed a lot of storytelling sins (not just the rampant horniness), but also managed a bunch of characters who showed real range in a lot of weird situations. It wasn't always perfect, or even good, but something manages to impress me every time I re-read.

im confused on how people thought this was some serious story, like shit was crazy since the beginning and evolved, like are you gonna shit on gurren laggan cause it went off the rails?? if this series didnt go off the rails that would honestly be weird

I've watched the anime and read this manga so many times since I first discovered it in my childhood, I honestly think it would be a 10/10 masterpiece comparable to things like Berserk, Vegabond, and Vinland Saga etc. EXCEPT the last 20 or 30 chapters, the ending leaves much to be desired, but at least the artstyle is 10/10 the whole way through and despite the ending I still love the characters and the whole concept of Air Gear... 9/10 would recommend.
